Catering Contract

A catering business initially has been set up to cater for the Barrick gold mine employees, but will subsequently cater for a wider range of mines believed to be coming on line in the next few years and an expanded local market.

The catering business is to initially provide the mine site workforce at Lake Cowal with on-site meals. There are approximately 350 people working on this site, including a small number of Aboriginal people.

It is also a site where the WCC has a vending machine it now operates, which is very profitable.

Shifts for employees at the mine site are long, 12 hours, 6am and 6pm. Few employees at the mine site are local people, so they often reside in rented accommodation.

The preferences these employees have for food choice, how it is presented, seasonal and nutrition are a high priority. Discussions with mine management strongly suggest that consistent value for money is also important in the eyes of workers.

While the image of mining employees might be large, strong and hungry men, there is considerable awareness of nutrition.

As part of this extended business, the WCC wish to establish catering for Barrick company events and functions. This business might be extended to the Lake Cowal foundation.
