The WSC is proposed as an iconic centre for Aboriginal cultural understanding, learning, research, training and wellbeing. The process begins by the fact that the building will be constructed by teams of local Aboriginal people using materials they either have made (eg compressed earth blocks), or are local to the region (eg cypress timber), and all is consistent with sustainability and caring for country principles. It will be accessible to interested non-Aboriginal students and visitors. With that end the WSC has the following components; Cultural Centre, Conservation and Environment Centre, Skills Development Centre, Indigenous Training, Wellness Centre, surrounding landscape and sporting facilities and a Yarn Up Space.

WINNERS Wiradjuri Condobolin Corporation

WCC was established 2004 and now employs up to 50 full time Aboriginal people. They have a wide range of enterprises including greenwaste management, furniture shop and are currently building the Wiradjuri Study Centre, which is being built through using all environment friendly products. The centre will become the home of cultural learning for Wiradjuri people throughout the Lachlan catchment in the future.

The Wiradjuri Study Centre first stage is nearing completion

Work is nearing completion on the WCC’s innovative new Study Centre, located at the All Sports Ground. CEO of WCC Percy Knight, is excited about what the new centre will mean for both the indigenous community and the community as a whole. Once completed, the facility will comprise a number of buildings including: a skills centre; a cultural environmental centre; a wellness centre to deal with drug and alcohol issues; a child and care facility; and an administration building. The skills centre will focus on mining industry training, skills which Percy says will be easily transferrable to other occupations. There will also be the development of a multi-purpose sports ground and the existing basketball courts will be revived.

Indigenous Heritage Program Funding for Wiradjuri ‘Keeping Place’

Under the Australian Government’s Indigenous Heritage Program, the WCC have been awarded funding for the ‘Wiradjuri Keeping Place’. The funding is for the leasing and fit-out of a building space to create a keeping place for approximately 5000-7000 artefacts and cultural items which have been salvaged from the Lake Cowal Gold Mine area.

Condobolin Training Alliance to boost Indigenous jobs

A training alliance has been launched to help cut the Indigenous unemployment rate in Condobolin. The alliance is a partnership between TAFE, the Wiradjuri Condobolin Corporation and Barrick Gold.

Wiradjuri Corporation CEO Percy Knight says, the aim is to help Aboriginal people find work, and help link employment and training to ensure people have a purpose for gaining qualifications.

"A lot of our people had accredited training and qualifications, but at the end of the day, they didn't have a job for all that training. So we thought that we can't continue to do that."
